Apple Mobile Phone sales put them in third place behind Nokia and Samsung
Recent research from the analyst outfit IDC have released an update on the situation at the top of the mobile phone market. Nokia is still holding on to first place, even though it has just experienced yet another quarter that saw shipment numbers fall. In the fourth quarter of 2011, a total of 113.5 million units were shipped, which is around 7.9 per cent lower than the year before. However, this has not affected its standings yet, as those below the Finnish phone manufacturer continue to produce numbers that are lower.
Second place is given to Samsung, who seem to be closing the gap between them and Nokia substantially. The former were able to increase sales of handsets by 17.6 per cent, while the latter’s were falling. This suggests that whatever tariff people are going for these days, whether it is O2 Simplicity or something else, more and more are tending to switch to Samsung handsets over Nokia ones. This results in Samsung holding a 21.3 per cent market share, although Nokia is still top with a 27 per cent share. These figures suggest, however, that perhaps Nokia’s reign is nearing its end, as if these trends continue, they are likely to be surpassed.
Apple has grabbed six per cent of the global mobile phone market, moving ahead of ZTE and LG in the fourth quarter of 2011. This is mainly due to the successful launch of the iPhone 4S, and the fact that their share of the market has been growing every year by 128 per cent. With Nokia reporting negative growth and Samsung growing by a smaller percentage than Apple, everything points to the latter surpassing both of these giants in the years to come.
